Over the last 14 years, I have been expanding my real estate business wearing many hats, agent, investor, and contractor. I have managed over 1500+ renovations for some of the largest investment companies in the nation throughout Las Vegas, Phoenix, Northern/Southern California, Denver, and Kansas City.
My creative obsession with real estate has led me to start companies and offer services that solve most buying, selling, and owing woes. All while learning how to parent.
Real estate is my preferred language
I started my real estate career right after the last bubble burst. Many people thought I was crazy and I was. I had left a successful career in early childhood development and I was ready to challenge myself to make more money. I was delusional in thinking that flipping homes was like a scene from an HGTV episode. Quickly, I realized how wrong I was. I was always drawn to Real Estate, not sure if it was the allure of making boatloads of money or what I thought seemed like a glamorous upgrade from the career I was leaving behind but I always knew I wanted to be financially independent. Real estate seemed like a perfect avenue to get me there. So I dove in, head first.
I was in my mid-twenties and had just left California and moved to Phoenix to help my parents with some issues they were facing at the time. At that point, I had no clue how I was going to get started in real estate and moving to a completely new place far away from anyone I knew, presented some challenges. I started to tell everyone that would listen that I was looking to start my career in real estate and if they knew anyone they should please connect me. Keep in mind the year was 2010 and Phoenix at that point resembled an abandoned post-war town. Most people were shocked that I was even considering real estate at that time and they even had me second-guessing myself. It was a horrible time for a real estate hopeful to get a start but I was adamant.
Eventually, through a co-worker, I found a group of guys that were making plans to form a home-flipping team. I volunteered to help in any way I could. I had zero experience at the time, but I was willing to put in the work so I could gain the necessary skills. I drove properties, went to auctions, met with sellers, raised money, and got my real estate license. I never said no to anything they needed help with. I became obsessed. Initially, I was shocked to see the home prices in Phoenix compared to what I was used to in the Bay Area. Housing was attainable and at that time cheap. I experienced a complete reprogramming of my perspective. I had come from a place where homeownership was nearly impossible and now I could buy 5 to 10 homes for the same amount of money required for a down payment in Silicon Valley. It was a new world and the possibilities were endless.
My newly found obsession with real estate was contagious. I started flipping homes with anyone that would jump in and give it a shot. Many people were still worried about the market but homes were so cheap that the risk was minimal. It was like fishing in a barrel. I had been trying to convince my brothers to move to Phoenix and join me, but leaving the coastal climate of northern California for the unbearable heat of the desert wasn’t appealing. Once my first deal was closed, I sent my older brother a photo of the profit check, he didn’t need more convincing after that. Within a few weeks, he and my younger brother moved to Phoenix and it was off to the races.
For several years, I flipped homes with my brothers while working fulltime as a project manager for Wedgewood Inc. and then Opendoor. It has been a privilege to learn from the best in companies in this space and an honor to have contributed to their growth and success. The experience I gained while renovating thousands of homes enhanced my project management and sales skills immensely. The volume of projects I completed in a month was more than most people ever do in a lifetime.
It’s been 10 years since I started, and looking back I can honestly say, it was all worth it. I was discouraged from starting my real estate career and laughed at for considering this path during the last financial crisis; if I had listened, I wouldn’t be here. I absolutely love this field and can’t see myself doing anything else.
If you are considering purchasing real estate as an investment or personal home I would be honored to represent you in your transaction. If you are not looking in Denver or Phoenix, drop me a line so I can refer you to an amazing local agent in my network.
